Did you know that 85% of cats and dogs over four years old have dental disease?
Your pet may be silently suffering from a dental disease so it is important to know the signs and what to do to maintain good oral hygiene.
How do I know if my pet has dental disease?
If your pet’s mouth is healthy, their teeth should appear white, gums should be pink and smooth, and their breath should have minimal odor.
The biggest giveaway of dental disease is bad breath. If you notice bad breath in your pet, it’s recommended that you check for other potential signs
These signs can include:
- A build up of tartar around the top of the teeth
- Red and/or bleeding gums
- Discoloured teeth
- Chewing food to one side of the mouth only
- Loose or missing teeth
- Distress and rubbing of the mouth
How can I help prevent dental disease in my pet?
The best way to prevent dental disease is by brushing your pet’s teeth daily. It’s important that you use a soft toothbrush and pet-friendly toothpaste (human toothpaste can be toxic to our furry friends!)
Other preventative tips include feeding your pet a dental diet, using dental toys and treats and having regular dental checks with your vet.
